Rather than me explaining The Flicks to you, here’s what readers said about the beloved theater (and Rick’s Cafe).
Roberta: “I know [where it is] because I spent my wedding evening there watching a movie on Valentine’s Day.”
Cali: “My favorite, and only, place in Boise to get brewers yeast in popcorn!”
Caroline: “Before catching a movie, sitting near The Flicks fireplace during the snowy winters with a glass of glühwein is so cozy!”
Tamara: “So many great memories!!! Having the best popcorn in town with my favorite beer.”
Sue: “This cozy theater has been a favorite of mine since I was in college. Nearly 40 years later it is still a welcoming place for delicious food, drinks and conversation before or after a movie.”
Maybe we should have included a Flicks gift card in our Mother’s Day gift guide!

Along with regular showings every day of the week, The Flicks often has events (like this weekend) and shows sets of short films on occasion. (@theflicksboise / Instagram)
The Flicks offers a lot of things that you just can’t get anywhere else in a city our size. First, it was until recently the only local theater around, and the only theater you can bring food into.
It’s also weirdly good food. You might not expect a restaurant in a movie theater to make lasagna as well as burgers, but everything on the menu is good.
It’s also, dare I say it, the only theater here that shows movies for the sake of movies (and I don’t mean that in a pretentious, film bro-y way). You can just tell that everyone there is there because they love cinema.
A lot of millennials and Gen Z grew up with only blockbuster movie theaters around, and this is a different, special kind of experience that will remind you why you love Boise.
Oh, and I missed them in my recent list of the best patios! Theirs just recently opened, and it’s shaded and gorgeous.
