August marks the last month of summer, back-to-school, and hot, smoky weather. But it isn’t all bad, and you might feel a bit better about the month after considering these ways to make the most of it in the City of Trees.
🤠 It’s Rodeo and Fair Season
The Western Idaho Fair and the famous Caldwell Night Rodeo both take place this month, shining a spotlight on our valley’s country roots, agriculture, and affinity for beer buckets and fried foods.
The Western Idaho Fair is at the Ada County Fairgrounds on August 16-25, and Caldwell Night Rodeo celebrates its centennial anniversary August 13-17, though the 16th and 17th are sold out. Caldwell’s very own Evelyn Avitia (and City Cast Boise podcast producer) has tips for avoiding scammers.
🤩 Tune Out With a Live Show
Boise’s music scene is notoriously strong, and venues and artists are booked and busy. Whether it’s a “brat” party at Treefort Music Hall, West Virginia bluegrass artist Sierra Ferrell at Outlaw Field, or Slaughterfest at The Shredder, there’s something for everyone on stage.
🌠 Consult the Stars and Meteors
City Cast Boise host Lindsay Van Allen is packing her kids in the car and heading to Bruneau Dunes State Park for some stargazing. The first weekend of the month will be the best time to see stars because of the new moon, and the Perseid meteor show follows on Aug. 11 and 12. Find which skies call to you near Boise.
🍛 The August Plate
The roster of remaining food festivals is dwindling as summer slows down, but the Boise Soul Food Festival will be the perfect late summer party on Aug. 10 in Julia Davis Park. Plus, every Saturday, area farmers markets are thriving with local produce. Say what you will about August, at least there are heirloom tomatoes here!
