January may be the first month of the year, but in many ways March marks the work of setting up and kicking off the rest of the year. So whether it’s gardening, socializing at Treefort, or getting out in nature, it’s time to dig into the fun of springtime!
The Can’t-Miss Events of March
Treefort Music Fest is one of Boise’s biggest annual events, drawing artists and fans from around the world for a five-day festival that covers downtown Boise. There are hundreds of performers, and while a full festival pass might take a sizable chunk out of your monthly budget, there’s also plenty to do for free. Storyfort, Podfort, and some music venues around town are free, and there are day passes for sale as well.
For another event that’s completely free, City Cast Boise podcast host Lindsay Van Allen suggests the Capitol Rotunda Art Show, which is the Idaho Watercolor Society’s 41st annual art exhibit in the Capitol’s 4th floor rotunda.
It runs the first two weeks of March and features paintings for sale. An artist reception will be held on March 8 with a Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra performance from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Start a Fun Run Training Plan (Or Just Get Outdoors)
Whether or not you’re holding to New Year’s fitness resolutions, it’s the perfect time to start training for a summer fun run, walk, or other goal. Get a warmup on March 15 with the YMCA’s St. Patrick’s Day Run, which includes a mile, 5K, and five-mile run. And check out other upcoming races here!
Even if you’re just hitting the Greenbelt once a week, spending time outside will get you more in touch with the city. Try one of these nature spots within city limits to add some variety.
As we come out of hibernation, we have a chance to restitch the fabric of our community. Especially at a time when so many things are uncertain and stressful, smiling and waving at strangers you pass on the Greenbelt might feel insignificant or even risky — but it’s the small kindnesses that add up to make a difference.
