As Boise turns the corner into March (some trees are budding already!), we’re thinking about changing up what we eat to keep things fresh. We’re getting ready for picnic season, so let’s talk about sandwiches.
Caffé Sorrento
These new kids on the block are actually the reason I wanted to reinvigorate a sandwich conversation in Hey Boise. Caffé Sorrento is the real deal! The Francesco sandwich pictured above has salami, a pecorino garlic spread, sun-dried tomatoes, fennel, and the surprise champion is the peppered arugula (that and the housemade focaccia). I’ve been four times and had to wait at least 30 minutes each time, but make a friend in line and enjoy yourself!
Roosevelt Market
As a former East Ender, I’m always delighted when I have an excuse to visit the quaint and airy Roosevelt Market. Not only does it have hard-to-beat neighborhood vibes, but their sandwiches and salads are fresh and delicious. The adult grilled cheese especially is a welcome hug.
Baguette Deli
On one of these warmer days coming up — like Thursday, which will be pushing 60° — grab a báhn mì from Baguette Deli and take it to your favorite park to get a microdose of summer. Baguette Deli is a tiny and sorely underrated Vietnamese deli at the Fred Meyer on Franklin Road, and you’ll be in and out in under 10 minutes at $10 a sandwich.
Uncle Giuseppe’s Deli
From Boise’s Marissa Lovell recommended this spot during her ranking of Boise’s best parks for adults, and it’s worth adding to your list, too. The Italian and New York deli at the intersection of Glenwood and State Street has perfect sandwiches for taking to a picnic, pasta salads for a side, and Italian pastries for dessert.
Cobby’s Sandwich Shops
For a classic, locally made sub, Cobby’s has been hitting all the right notes since the 70s. They’ve got locations on Overland and Chinden, and they’re easy to order for pick up.
Try Some New Bites and Some Classics
Perhaps sandwiches deserve a two-part series, because there are plenty more delicious sandwiches to try. From some Hey Boise reader recommendations and some tried-and-true classics, here are a few more to add to your list:
- Anything from Deli George.
- The Silver Duck from Fat Guy’s Fresh Deli.
- The Cubano from CasaBlanca Cuban Grill.
- Don & Charly’s, a pretty new 10th Street addition.
- MB Sandwich House — new to my radar, but with fun options and rich!
- A lamb or chicken grinder (also, is a solomo a sandwich?) from Bar Gernika.
Lastly, R.I.P. to Txikiteo’s jamon sandwich, I still think about you.
