City Cast Boise’s first interview with Boise Mayor Lauren McLean is out today, and we wrapped up a long conversation by asking some lighter questions to get to know her. We didn’t see the hot dog takes coming!
What’s your favorite quick lunch spot near City Hall?
“If I only have a few minutes, I go over to JD’s Bodega and get hot dogs. Two for $4 with a drink, it’s the best deal in town.”
If you have a cool friend from college coming to town, where do you go to impress them?
“I think just being in Boise is the show off, right? Stand up at the Depot, you show them the city…For me, it’s restaurants, it’s 8th Street, it’s the river, it’s the Greenbelt, it’s Bogus in winter, it’s all those things. And then it’s just soaking up the essence of Boise, which is walking through neighborhoods that are just so unique.”
Pick one, and tell us where you get your favorite: finger steaks, fries and fry sauce, or Basque food?
“Oh, fries and fry sauce, for sure. My go-to is, because it’s right across the street: Boise Fry [Company]. They’ll tell you I’m there way too often. And I like garlic aioli the most.”
Favorite Boise author?
“Tony Doerr, hands down. And I loved his work even before everybody knew him because of ‘All the Light You Cannot See.’ But I just picked up ‘All the Light’ again after watching the show, and it was weird — the physical, emotional reaction I had just to even the first chapter.”
Favorite foothills trail?
“Daniel’s Creek has always been my favorite.”
