For the first time in 2024, the sun rises before 8 a.m. and sets after 6 p.m. today, and it’s hard to overstate how significant that news is for my fellow Boiseans with cabin fever. Here are some ways to get out and about and have yourself a delightful February.
🌹 Celebrate the Month’s Holidays
The Idaho State Museum’s Lunar New Year Celebration has come and gone, but the Year of the Dragon is just beginning. The holiday starts on Feb. 10 and lasts until Feb. 24, so learn more and join City Cast Boise podcast guest host Nick Quah as he cooks through the holiday season.
February is also Black History Month. We’ll publish an article about how the holiday was created tomorrow, and you can check out the Idaho Black Community Alliance for events throughout the month. Plus, if you need something to do tomorrow, check out their fundraiser!
And lastly, Valentine’s Day unfortunately falls on a Wednesday this year. I’ll have plenty of ways to celebrate later this week, whether you’re celebrating a romantic partnership, friendships, or entertaining yourself. Keep an eye on our events page for plenty of Valentine’s-themed community events.
If all you need on your Valentine’s Day is a comforting meal, we’ve got you covered there.
🎭 Go See a Show
Even if you aren’t a theater person, these two plays will be worth the watch.
Boise Contemporary Theater (BCT) resumed its season last week. “Clyde’s” is now running, which is about a sandwich shop’s staff of formerly incarcerated people getting their feet back under them. It was written by Lynn Nottage, who wrote “Sweat,” which featured at BCT last year.
“Clyde’s” will run until Feb. 17, and on Wednesday, school employees get in for 50% off.
“Wolf / Girl” premiers on Thursday, giving us a look into the latest play by local writer Heidi Kraay. The story of a misfit adolescent, you can expect some twists on classic werewolf tropes.
Catch “Wolf / Girl” at the Danny Peterson Theatre inside the Morrison Center at Boise State University, Thursday through Saturday over the next two weeks.
And if it isn’t already a February tradition for you, make sure to spend a night at the Flicks watching the Oscar-nominated short films, starting Feb. 16
🏔️ Get Outside!
February is one of the best months to visit one of Idaho’s hot springs, partially because it can make a fun Valentine’s Day daytrip. And with so little snow and so much mud on the trails, our outdoor options are a little limited right now.
Boise State Public Radio’s George Prentice had some unexpected outdoors recommendations, so I’ll let you take your pick:
- Cupid’s Undie Run, a benefit for neurofibromatosis awareness this Saturday.
- Woo at the Zoo is a 21+ event to save an underwhelming Valentine’s Day.
- Indian Creek Plaza’s ice skating rink will stay open until Feb. 17.
