Your Daily Guide

Happy Thursday! On our penultimate City Cast Boise podcast episode, we’re returning to one of our favorite topics (and something many of you are consuming at this very moment). Coffee culture says a lot about a city, and Boise's scene is evolving. Our producer Evelyn Avitia sipped her way through the newest coffee shops to find the best spots for getting work done, grabbing a fall flavored pick-me-up, and soaking up the coffeehouse vibes with friends. She’s telling host Lindsay Van Allen which new coffee shops are really worth a visit.

What Boise's Talking About

🚨 Local Law Enforcement Clarifies ICE Claims

A Department of Homeland Security statement claimed ICE was responsible for shutting down illegal horse race gambling in Wilder on Sunday. In an unusual clarification, the Canyon County Sheriff and Caldwell Police called the statement “completely false and a serious misrepresentation of the facts,” and “deeply misleading to the public.” The FBI ran the operation, and ICE piggybacked to arrest 105 people who they say don’t have citizenship documents. • The whereabouts of those 105 community members are still unknown to many of their families. Here’s the story of one woman, whose husband was detained in front of his young grandson without an opportunity to ask questions or get a lawyer. [KTVB]

🍲 Fed Shutdown Prompts SNAP Stoppage

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare will stop issuing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits after October ends because of the federal government shutdown. SNAP funding would run out about a week into November if it continued, and it won’t restart until the government is running again. Over 42 million Americans will lose SNAP benefits. 🗳️ And There’s Still an Election Coming Up!

Election Day is just around the corner, and Idaho EdNews has a great compilation of school board races around the state. [Idaho EdNews]

More Boise Events

I’d be remiss if one of my parting messages didn’t encourage you to support local journalism. We talk about that more in tomorrow’s podcast episode, but if you can get rid of one national or corporate subscription in favor of a local one, please do it — because is the New York Times going to show you bobcats on the Greenbelt? No!

And here’s a reminder that if you want more local writing, I’m dreaming up what a newsletter of my own might look like, as this one ends! Sign up to hear from me down the road.
