To protect everyone’s time (as in, let’s not get too bogged down in election stuff before we have to), I’ll keep this part short. With less than four months to election day, here’s the lay of the land in Boise city council races.
District 1 - West Boise
No challengers so far.
District 2 - West Bench & Winstead
Incumbent: Colin Nash, who was appointed to an at-large seat earlier this year.
Challenger: Former Democratic legislator Grant Burgoyne.
Key distinction: Nash and Burgoyne are both former lawmakers who represented Boise, but one interesting difference is that Nash voted to approve the new zoning code, while Burgoyne spoke against the zoning code.
District 3 - Southwest Boise & Some Central Bench
Incumbent: Latonia Haney Keith is the current appointee in this district, but hasn’t announced whether she’ll be running.
Challengers:
- Chris Blanchard, an urban studies specialist who is on the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission.
- Theresa Vawter, an Idaho Food Bank staff member.
- Joe Evans, whose name you might remember from a City Cast Boise conversation with Kind Idaho.
- Tech executive Josh Johnston.
District 4 - South, Southeast Boise
Another at-large seat, Jordan Morales is currently running unchallenged.
District 5 - Downtown, East End, some North End
In the running: Meredith Stead, another Planning & Zoning Commissioner, announced she’s running in this district a couple of weeks ago.
District 6 - Some North End, Northwest Boise
Currently, only incumbent Jimmy Hallyburton has announced an intent to run for this seat.
