Between political rhetoric and the speed of the news cycle, helping enact change can feel insurmountable, but making a difference typically begins with the individuals and organizations closest to us. Here are a few ways to support communities around Boise.
Leverage Your Inner Circle
Community is built by individuals, so family, friends, and coworkers are a great place to start. Inner circle folks are likely to have volunteer opportunities to recommend or causes they’re passionate about. Conversely, making time to check on friends might not seem significant, but reciprocal support is the foundation of community.
There’s also a good chance that the places you frequent — coffee shops, gyms, etc. — have connections to causes that could use assistance or donations. And don’t discount social media. Avoid doomscrolling and follow organizations to stay in the loop on volunteer opportunities, events, and drives.
Attend Local Meetings
Public meetings for things like school districts, city council, and neighborhood associations are where decisions are made that directly impact local communities, though they tend to have low attendance. It’s not exactly “sexy,” but higher attendance helps ensure more of the community has input on important decisions. Plus, if you’ve ever watched the show “Parks & Rec,” you’re already primed for what goes on in local civics.
It’s ‘Parks & Rec’ meets Reddit.

Community-Driven Organizations to Support in Boise
Boise Mutual Aid is built around the idea that not all neighborly assistance is “charity,” providing avenues for anyone in Boise to give what they can, when they can — be it food, clothing, or time.
Boise Kitchen Collective operates under the mutual aid concept to distribute food to anyone that might need it. They accept food, monetary, and hygiene donations. The collective currently needs cooks every week starting next week.
Boise Health Care Organizations to Support
Idaho Abortion Rights pulls from different sources to help Idaho residents access information and abortion care. They accept monetary donations and host community events to help educate the public.
Similarly, the Boise Period Project distributes menstrual hygiene products through donations. They also have an Amazon wishlist where folks can purchase specific items for distribution, and host “period box packing parties” with the help of volunteers.
Faces of Hope provides wraparound services to persons of all ages in Idaho who are experiencing domestic violence or abuse.
