Barber Valley hasn’t always been filled with sleek new homes and coveted trailhead access. Back in the early 1900s, it was a bustling mill town called Barberton, built around the Barber Lumber Company. It was the second-largest city in Ada County, until the mill closed in 1935 and the town disappeared almost overnight. Fast forward nearly a century and Barber Valley is booming once again.

Outdoor Access

One of Barber Valley’s biggest draws is how effortlessly it blends neighborhoods into the outdoors. You can step out your front door and be on the Greenbelt or at a local trail within minutes.

Barber Park is a local favorite, not just for sprawling lawns and walking paths, but as one of the main launching points for floating the Boise River. For a quieter afternoon, I’d recommend the fountains and scenic foothills views at Marianne Williams Park.

Dining and Coffee

Even though the neighborhood feels tucked away, it still has strong local flavors like longtime Boise favorite Lucky 13 Pizza. And just across the street is The STIL, where you can grab some boozy ice cream to cool off post-float.

I’m always on the lookout for delicious coffee and at The Coffee Mill, they’re serving lattes in a cozy atmosphere. Just a short walk away, Brewed European Coffee House added a little Old World Charm with locally made cardamom cookies and gelato.

Local Growth & Connection

Barber Valley is home to some of Boise’s most well-planned subdivisions, like Harris Ranch, that have a strong community feel. Driving around, you’ll also see a lot of new construction, including apartments and mixed use developments, as the area prepares to grow from 5,000 residents to 7,000 in the next few years.

But despite all of the construction the neighborhood feels peaceful, with the foothills wrapping around the housing and the Greenbelt cutting through the parks. Barber Valley seems to offer what so many people in Boise are looking for: a place that feels just far enough away but is still entirely connected.
