City Cast Boise contributor Jocelyn Robertson brought the City Cast Boise team to the ballpark, and we have some recommendations for how to have a great time at a Boise Hawks game.

Q: Jocelyn, what can people expect at a Boise Hawks game?

 I love the Memorial Stadium, because it’s old school baseball. It’s got little tiny plastic seats that fold up and down, it’s got nowhere to put your drink, but it feels really personal and really intimate. The crowds are always enthusiastic, you can see all the action, and you don’t have to wait in a super long line for any drinks or hot dogs or anything, and you can get to your seat easily — this just feels like hometown baseball.

Q: What are some tips for how to enjoy the game?

 I didn’t get the Idaho Philly cheesesteak, but it looked good as hell. Honestly, everything I saw somebody eating there and everything I ate was really tasty; perfect baseball park food, honestly. I got the Killer Kielbasa on Jocelyn’s recommendation, and it was incredible.

 Sit on the third base side, even though that’s technically the visitors’ side, it’s not in the glaring sun. … Have your hot dog early while it’s hot, and as the game is in the seventh inning stretch, get that ice cream and it’ll take you through to the end.

 We went on a Wednesday and it could not have been better. I’ve been on Saturdays and you should go to that, but if you’re anxious about the mass of people and being crowded, go on a weeknight.

Q: For people on the fence, do you recommend trying a Hawks game?

If you feel like baseball is not for you, I am really with you — [but] just go try it out.

 I obviously recommend it … [it’s] fun for the whole family, I’m here recruiting new baseball fans.

 I want to tell people: If you haven’t ever been, go, and if you have been but it’s been a while, get together a group of friends and just go sit on the shady side and have a great time.

It’s concert season! Here are a few exciting things happening this week that I thought deserved their own spotlight.

The Record Exchange is hosting Boise-based 

 ahead of his new album “Heaven Is a Junkyard,” on Friday, the day it comes out. Pre-order the album on vinyl or CD (including the incredible Acid Western Idaho exclusive vinyl) for your wristband.

On a less local front, the Record Exchange is also hosting an 

’s new album “The Age of Pleasure,” which comes out Friday. The party is on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., and is free, but you’ll need a wristband. There’ll be giveaways, too!

🤠 Now for some grassroots / folksy / country shows, courtesy of Duck Club.

Joshua Ray Walker is bringing twang to the Olympic

, joined by Jade Jackson, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. $20 in advance, $25 at the door.

Pink Fuzz, a grassroots sibling-led group from Denver, is 

 on Thursday at 7 p.m. They’re joined by Floating Witch’s Head and MÔS, who are from Boise and Nampa, respectively. $12 in advance, $15 at the door.

I’ve been lucky to work with podcast host and comedian Emma Arnold for the last several months, and it’s been an absolute joy. You get to hear her on 

 every weekday, but I wanted to do a Hey Boise check-in with her since it's been a minute. If you’re a fan of Emma’s comedy or the podcast,

Q: What has surprised you about your job so far?

"I think I've been most surprised by how quickly and easily our team clicked. It feels like we've been at this forever. In a good way! The experience has been really different from standup comedy, which can be very isolating and competitive. I love being part of something so collaborative, people are always giving each other shoutouts and support and everyone has been incredibly kind to me."

Q: You’ve mentioned that part of the allure of this job is getting to be involved locally. What do you hope to achieve in your community?

"I think like a lot of people in the Treasure Valley, these last few years have left me feeling pretty disconnected from my city. Housing, politics, not going out as much, even just the fact that downtown feels barely recognizable! We considered moving but at the end of the day, Boise really is our home. I hope to remind our listeners of the amazing, compassionate, very fun, and unique people that make up our community, for us all to feel more involved and connected and hopeful."

Q: How are you feeling about the album release party tomorrow?

"Excited! I’m performing all new material, which is a real treat after touring an hour of standup for over a year to get it album-ready. Visual Arts Collective is one of my favorite venues in the world and it feels very special to celebrate the release of my second comedy special there, since it’s where I taped the first. Plus all my City Cast Boise besties will be there!"

3 Questions With City Cast Boise’s Emma Arnold

Boise’s home to more than 20 craft breweries, each of which is its own reason to try some local beers. City Cast Boise Lead Producer Frankie Barnhill and contributor Heath Druzin teamed up to deliver some self-described “unqualified, completely made up” 

 last year, though it sounds like they have plenty of experience in the arena.

Highlands Hollow: An oldie but goodie, with a cozy fireplace.

The Best Breweries in Boise

It’s located at the 

 thrift store at 6464 West State St., but it’s operated by the Interfaith Sanctuary.

Interfaith’s Executive Director, 

Jodi Peterson-Stigers, told Boise State Public Radio

 that the collective originated when an unhoused Boisean grew tired of being ignored on the streets. He started painting on an easel in public, which drew people to him.

That was in 2019, and this month, the collective opened to the public for the first time. The art on display is all by unhoused Boiseans, and sales go back to support the artists.

The art collective serves a need for unhoused Boiseans to express themselves and be seen with dignity, similarly to the 


Not only does homelessness often separate people from their means to make art, but it also deprives people of crucial self-soothing practices. Supporting the collective directly helps artists in need, so

recently learned about Boise Christmas Lights

They’ve got you covered with displays synced to music, community displays, and, soon, will have
